Objective: evaluation of relationship between clinical characteristics and attitude towards disease in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Subjects: 50 patients with AF (24 males, 26 females aged 40 to 69; 80% with paroxysmal AF, 20% with permanent AF), for the first time (68%) or repeatedly (32%) treated with radiofrequency catheter ablation. Methods: Interview, case report forms analysis standardized psychological inventories: “Integrative Anxiety Test”, “Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale”, “Method for Psychological Diagnostics of the Types of Attitude Towards Disease”. Results: Most patients were highly anxious and frustrated with the disease. The interrelations between clinical characteristics of AF and psychological characteristics of the patients were found. Patients with “silent” AF are less anxious than symptomatic patients however they are less informed about the disease and less compliant. Patients with symptoms clearly localized in the heart area are more anxious than patients with various specific and non-specific complaints. Patients with permanent AF are more pessimistic about the disease and treatment than patients with paroxysmal AF. The attitude towards disease in patients with idiopathic AF is more senisitive, egocentric and paranoic (mistrustful). The duration of AF is positively correlated with awareness about the disease and compliance as well as with tendency to overconcentration on the symptoms and groundless limitation of daily activity. Patients having unsuccessful treatment experience with catheter ablation procedure are more sensitive about the disease (more concerned about the other people’s reaction to their disease). Conclusion: Knowledge of relationship between clinical and psychological characteristics in patients with AF may be used for development of differentiated approaches to psychological support during treatment.
