The problem of peculiarities of interacting partners’ self-identification is discussed. It is shown that there is a tradition of developing this problem in classical theories is shown and at the same time new approaches related to contemporary studies of identity are coming on. A special attention is given to the analysis of narrative as a mean of "detecting" represented identity as well as a mean of identifying motivation for identity "adjustment" in various communicative situations. The concept of narrative identity developed within K. Gergen's theory of social construction is stated. Some prospects of searching techniques for experimental study of the problem are suggested.

Keywords: identity, self-identification, social identity, interaction, narrative, narrative identity
